In fact, recent research conducted by two third-party research firms, confirms those assumptions and provides insights into the specific reasons why change can be so hard, and is some cases, why it can be worth it.

And, this is why so many dealerships are afraid to make a move. They are worried that it will distract from the things that matter most–ensuring customer care and business productivity. Though, the rule isn’t one size fits all.
What do dealers want out of a new DMS?
Respondents to the survey cited four qualities–innovation, customer service and training, value, and integration–as the most important factors when looking for a new DMS provider. For dealers, innovation and integration go hand in hand–they want an all-in-one solution that works with other platforms.
Why do so many dealers stay with their current DMS?
One of the more interesting study findings shows that even though dealers are afraid to change, in general, they have a negative view of their current DMS software and provider. According to the study, respondents felt reluctant to change because they were, at least, familiar with using their current system. Many dealers balk at change primarily because of hassle, lack of a better alternative, and locking into a long-term contract.
So, who actually makes a switch?
The study showed that dealers who switched platforms did so for a variety of reasons, though the common theme involved facilitating opportunities to grow their businesses. Better price, getting higher quality product, ease of use, and better costumer service and support were listed as the top reasons dealers made a switch. Interestingly, despite their initial reluctance to change, many dealers found their new providers to be helpful and the platforms easy to use.
